How Often Should You Get a Facial? Every 4 to 6 Weeks, and the Skin Biology Behind It

How often should you get a facial?

Every four to six weeks. That's the question I've been asked more than any other at the treatment table lately, and the answer comes straight from how your skin renews itself.

I've been doing this since 1997, and the timing never changes because the biology never changes. Once you understand what's happening under the surface, the four week rhythm makes sense.

How Often Should You Get a Facial? Every 4 to 6 Weeks, and the Skin Biology Behind It

Where new skin cells start

Your skin makes new cells deep down, in the basal layer. That's the bottom of the epidermis, sitting just above the dermis.

From there, each cell travels upward. As it rises it flattens, loses moisture and eventually reaches the surface, where it sheds.

That trip takes roughly 28 to 48 days.

If you're younger, it happens faster. If you're older, or you're dealing with health issues, it takes longer. This is one of the reasons mature skin can look dull sooner: the old cells hang around at the surface longer before they let go.

Why a facial lines up with that cycle

A facial works on the cells that have finished their trip. I exfoliate what's ready to come off, clear congestion, and treat the fresh layer underneath.

When you come in every four weeks, each facial meets a new cycle of cells. Nothing has had time to build up and settle in.

When you wait three months, you've let two or three cycles stack on the surface. Pores fill, texture roughens and the glow fades. That first appointment back spends most of its time catching up.

Why extractions hurt less on a schedule

This is the part clients notice first. On a steady rhythm, with the right home care, the skin arrives already prepared. The surface is softer, the congestion is looser and extractions are quick.

I hear it from returning clients all the time: "the extractions didn't hurt like they had before." That comes from preparing the skin weeks ahead, between visits.

The 72 hour window

A facial increases circulation to the skin. More circulation brings more hydration to the cells, and studies show that benefit lasts up to 72 hours.

That's the fresh, plump look you see in the mirror the day after an appointment. It's real, and it's temporary on its own.

What keeps it going is the combination of a regular schedule and good home care. Each facial gives you a boost, your home care holds the gains, and the next visit builds on them. You maintain that glowing skin longer when the visits don't drift apart.

Four weeks or six?

For most people, I recommend four weeks. It matches the faster end of the renewal cycle and keeps your skin from slipping backward between appointments.

Six weeks can be right for some skin, especially if your renewal runs slower because of age or a health condition, or if your home care is very consistent. I'll tell you which one fits you at your consultation, and I'll explain why.

What I'll steer you away from is the every-few-months approach. It isn't a waste, and any facial is good for your skin, but you'll spend your money undoing buildup rather than moving forward.

What happens between visits

Every appointment starts with a consultation. Bring your bottles, the actual products you use, and we'll go through them together. If something you already own is working, I'll tell you to keep using it.

When you leave, you'll know your steps for the next four weeks. If a product isn't needed, I won't sell it to you. If something on your skin needs a physician instead of a facial, I'll tell you that too.

Book your next facial four weeks out

The simplest way to stay on rhythm is to book the next one before the current one fades. Pick a date four weeks from your last visit, or from today if it's been a while, and we'll take it from there.
